The Journey of Our Business Lives

A spiritual leader recently used the metaphor of a shepherd walking alongside his sheep and to use that picture in our minds as we walk alongside our sisters and brothers in life.

Well, with my interest in leadership, I immediately thought that the metaphor of the shepherd is a good picture for us as leaders in our companies, walking alongside our team members on their journey through their business lives.

The shepherd cares deeply about each sheep in his flock, speaks gently with them, always helping them. I think of the shepherd’s staff as her(his) character, the strength that comes with her humility, integrity, empathy, positive attitude, emotional intelligence and kindness.

The sheep know their shepherd is selfless in that he cares first about them, the flock – we want our team members to feel we care deeply about them, individually and as a team.

Our staff, i.e., our character and our qualities mentioned above, come from the depth of our inner-being, that we realize that we are here on earth to love and to serve others. That’s what matters most.

So many people nearing the end of their lives say they wish they had contributed more to the well-being of others and how they helped others feel good about themselves.

Our serving others, being concerned with their well-being and their success could well be our every day goal, that we accompany and help our team members on each day of their business lives.

Embodying this attitude creates a healthy culture and leads to attractive and consistent financial results.

I invite us to think about this during the next several weeks and I hope it helps us put our leadership in perspective, that it is a gift and let’s make it an engrained priority so our people are happy and engaged and we all enjoy a healthy organizational culture.
