Remembering Names Is Huge!

It is not easy to remember names, yet it is vitally important. Do it well and you will not only make people feel good, you will win friends and fans.

A smile, a firm handshake, eye contact and calling someone by her/his name makes a very positive impression and gets a conversation off to a good start as people very much appreciate hearing their name used!

Using available helpful hints and advice definitely takes work, and the effort is definitely well worth it in the long run!

Here are practices that will help you:

  • Make a commitment that you want to improve remembering names, recognizing that this is important to your success
  • Concentrate, pay close attention when meeting someone
  • Be interested in the person and her/his name
  • Remember it's okay to ask how to spell the name – it may help you remember it
  • Repeat the person's name during your conversation and potentially comment on it
  • If there is a visual reminder to connect the name with the person, use it
  • Repeat the name again when ending the conversation
  • Write the name down afterwards

Being good at remembering names takes practice, just as other important critical success qualities require practice. Learn to do it well and you'll have a competitive advantage in business. People will feel you're interested in them, they'll feel complimented and will feel good about themselves.

If you want to be better at remembering names, and I encourage you to do so, make a commitment: you will make a conscientious effort every day this week to remember names – new people you are introduced to, and also people whose names you should know, maybe within your company, other companies, and service people who help you.

You'll enrich lives, starting with your own!
