A Guide for Us: How Can I Improve the Lives of Others?

by John Keyser

This morning, I heard a spiritual leader ask, “How can we improve the lives of others?”

What a beautiful, purposeful, powerful question. A question all of us in leadership positions ought to keep in the forefront of our minds. In fact, this should be one of our highest priorities, “How do I help my team members improve their work, their success, their satisfaction, and their careers?”

This is servant leadership!

My favorite boss, Bill Dunn, modeled this thinking and behavior. He genuinely cared for his people, was there for us, and was always eager to offer his help. Bill had humility, would laugh at himself, did not have a personal agenda, was generous with his time. His success and satisfaction came from the success and satisfaction of his team.

Bill looked to improve the lives of others, as we all should!

I have been blessed, as I have worked with so many outstanding leaders. Common threads are their humility and their genuine care for their team members. They regularly ask their team members for their ideas, which of course is appreciated. And, they are getting lots of valuable ideas.

As leaders, let’s bear in mind everyday, “How can I improve the lives of others?”
